In the pages that follow I show common vertebrates I’ve encountered on my home beaches in northern Oregon. A lot of what you’ll see are gory drift line images. When I have them, I post photos of live animals too.

Identifying shoreline vertebrates is fun, but not always easy. I’m always asking for help with tricky identifications – shorebirds and gulls, for example. Even drift line finds pose ID challenges. In the pages that follow there’s always a chance I’ll make a mistake or use an outdated common or scientific name. Maybe you’ll have a different interpretation of something you see. If you notice something like that I hope you’ll let me know. Click on the links below to see are examples of common vertebrates from the exposed outer coast, and drift line finds from the intertidal and its sister ecosystems.
